What to Wear - Fall Family Sessions

What are we going to wear?!?

Fall family sessions are coming soon and figuring out what to wear is always a challenge and can add unnecessary stress to an already busy time of year.  Don't worry. I’ve got you.  Here are my top 5 tips as well as my go-to pinterest board for fall family sessions!

1.  Keep it simple, but not too simple.
Y'all remember that look from the 90's where everyone wore matching white shirts?  Please don't do that.  :) Instead, pick items that most everyone would be somewhat comfortable wearing.  If dad isn't a collared shirt kind of guy, that's fine!  A nice comfy solid color sweater looks nice or a long sleeve t-shirt with a puffy vest is always sharp!  Your 4 year old only wants to wear ninja turtle t-shirts?  I feel you.  Let's do a ninja turtle shirt with a sweater or button-up over it, with a promise that he can take the top shirt off at the end and do a few shots with his t-shirt and favorite ninja turtle weapons!  Don't get too caught up in everyone looking like something out of a Ralph Lauren ad.  I promise you, let everyone be a "cleaned-up" version of themselves and everyone will be happy!

2.  Start with one item and build around it.
If you have a favorite dress or sweater that you feel great in, it serves as a perfect starting point.  Use that item as your color palette and build around it.  If it's patterned, then one of your kiddos can be in a more solid color look or vice versa.  Mixing colors and patterns is a great way to help your session feel like "you" and give it some dimension.

3.  Be careful with patterns and colors
Neutral and deep colors photograph wonderfully.  No, everyone doesn't need to be in a bland sea of gray or tan.  Throw in some textures and patterns with primarily neutral and deep tones (maroon, mustard, navy, charcoal, dark green) and it will come together very nicely.  If you love bright colors, I hear you.  I love them too!  Super bright yellows and greens don't typically do the skin any favors. Perhaps a good compromise is more neutral clothing choices with a bright accessory!

4.  Think about your environment
Try not to match the general color of your surroundings.  For example, if you are at a park with beautiful orange fall leaves, an orange sweater might not be the best choice.  Similarly, if you are in a park that is still primarily green, a green dress might get lost in the photographs.

5.  Awesome accessories
Accessories create layers and interest to the style of photographs.  Here are some go-to ideas:

  • Scarves

  • Headband/bows

  • Fun, bright/patterned socks for guys

  • Earrings/necklaces/bracelets

  • If you like lipstick, I love a bright lip as an accessory!

  • If you have small children - let them bring their favorite comfort item or something they are proud of. Someday, you will look back on that precious face holding that little pacifier/lovie/paw patrol doll and melt. (it doesn't have to be in every picture, but we will make time to have a few with their prized possession!)
